5 easy hikes from our door
No ropes, no scrambling, no 5 a.m. alarm. Five walks we send nearly every guest on — all reachable on foot, by cable car or the little red mountain train.
Every morning someone asks Marek the same question over breakfast: “What can we do today that's beautiful but not brutal?” These are his five answers. All of them start within a few minutes of the house (or of the tram stop at the bottom of the road).
1. Skalnaté pleso by cable car
Walk five minutes to the lower station, ride up to the glacial lake at 1,751 m and stroll the shoreline. If you want a little more, follow the path down through the dwarf pines to Štart and ride the cable car back down from there. About 1–2 hours of walking.
2. The Studený potok waterfalls
Take the Tatra electric railway to Starý Smokovec and the funicular to Hrebienok. From there it's a gentle walk to the waterfalls of the Cold Creek valley and Rainerova chata, the oldest mountain hut in the Tatras — try the tea. About 1.5 hours.
3. Around Štrbské Pleso
Flat, pram-friendly and very pretty: a loop around the lake with the ski-jump towers and the peaks reflected in the water. Perfect for the day the grandparents come along. 45 minutes.
4. Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso
A steady woodland climb to a second, wilder lake and the symbolic cemetery of mountaineers nearby. Lunch at the hut, then back the same way. About 2.5 hours there and back.
5. The forest loop above the village
No transport at all: out of our gate, up through the spruce forest along the marked path towards Štart, and back down to the village for cake. Good for a first afternoon, or the last one. About 2 hours.
Times are relaxed walking times without stops. Weather in the mountains changes fast — check the forecast and the mountain-rescue advice before you go, and ask us in the morning.
