What to pack for the Tatras in October

· by Jana

Golden larches, empty trails and the first snow on the summits. October is our favourite month — if you pack for four seasons in one day.

October in the High Tatras is quiet, golden and unpredictable. You can eat lunch in a T-shirt at Skalnaté pleso and walk home in sleet. Here's the list Jana gives every autumn guest.

The essentials

  • Layers, not one big coat. A thermal base layer, a fleece and a waterproof, windproof shell.
  • Proper boots with grip. Wet granite and fallen leaves are slippery.
  • Hat and gloves — even if it's sunny in the village, it's winter at 2,000 m.
  • A head torch. It's dark by six, and a short walk can take longer than planned.
  • Walking poles for the descents (we have spares in the hall).

Nice to have

  • A thermos — the huts are open, but tea on a rock with a view is better.
  • Cash for the mountain huts, which don't always take cards.
  • Swimwear for a rainy-day trip to the thermal pools in Poprad.
  • A good book for the stove lounge.

Remember: from 1 November the high-mountain trails above the huts close until mid-June. Late October is your last chance for the higher routes this year — plan the big day early in your stay, in case the weather turns.

And if you forget something? Tell us. Between the lost-property box and three generations of wardrobe, we've kitted out more than one guest.
